Native Plants found on Maungawhau

In the remanants of bush found on the Maunga the following native plants are found:

  • harakeke - Flax (phormium cookianum)
  • huruhuruwhenua - Shining spleenwort (asplenium oblongifolium)
  • kanuka (kunzea ericoides)
  • karaka (corynocarpus)
  • karamu (coprosma)
  • kawakawa (macropiper excelsum)
  • kohekohe (dysoxylum)
  • mahoe (melicytus)
  • mangaeo (litsea)
  • manuka - Tea tree (leptospermum scoparium)
  • ngaio (myoporum)
  • pigeonwood (hedycarya)
  • pohuehue - Wire vine (muehlenbeckia complexa)
  • pohutukawa (metrosideros excelsa)
  • puriri (vitex)
  • rangiora (brachyglottis)
  • stinging nettle (urtica incisa)
  • ti kouka - Cabbage tree (cordyline australis)
  • titoki (alectryon)
  • toatoa (haloragis erecta)
  • wharawhara (astelia banksii)
  • whau (entelea)

It is likely that some of these species may have been planted by the Maori inhabitants of Maungawhau. Both karaka and puriri trees are often found in association with village sites.
