"Pou" on Southern Slope of Maunga

We are often asked about the significance of the sculpture or "Pou" that is located on the southern slope near the Owens Rd pedestrian entrance

Pou on Mt Eden

This Maori "pou" recognises the cultural importance of the area to the first people on this land and also the ancient trail that passed this way. Please visit the area because Ngati Whatua have erected a plaque on the entry gate that gives a clear explanation.

The traditions of Maori are not ours to tell but the Friends of Maungawhau support Ngati Whatua and the co-management arrangement.  We hope the wonderful history will be better known to Aucklanders and visitors when the authority of Maungawhau and the other volcanic cones are transferred to the Tamaki collective under the Treaty of Waitangi settlement. This Pou is a good start to what is to come.

For further information please visit the Ngati Whatua o Orakei website.
